San Diego CCD Miramar College Library / Learning Resource Center and Central Quad
Location:San Diego, California
Design Consultants:Architect-Zagrodnik & Thomas Architects, LLP
For San Diego Miramar College, part of the San Diego Community College District, Sundt added a new Learning Library Resource Center. The three-story, 105,000-square-foot building houses library resources and support information technology operations. It includes a 236-seat auditorium, classrooms, a computer lab and a media production facility. The adjacent central quad consists of landscaped areas and circular concrete pathways that mimic an aviation navigational tool – homage to the site’s former use as an airfield. The building core is structural steel; a mix of plaster and stone veneer makes up the exterior.
Environmentally friendly features include a light-colored exterior that helps reflect the sun’s heat to reduce cooling costs and minimize the heat island effect. Drought-tolerant landscaping and the latest water-saving technologies were implemented to reduce water use. The use of local and regional materials, low volatile organic compound-emitting indoor materials, adhesives, sealants and paints and a high-efficiency HVAC system contribute to reducing the building’s carbon footprint. To emphasize the district’s desire to conserve energy, educational signage was added to identify building components that promote sustainability.
