EL PASO, Texas (November 22, 2019) – Sundt Construction, Inc. transformed Interstate 10 (I-10) on the westside of El Paso to improve the flow of traffic for all users by working diligently to expedite the schedule without compromising safety.
“We’re very proud to help improve commute times and driver experience on this portion of the I-10,” said Sundt’s El Paso Area Manager Mark Soyster. “Our team went above and beyond on this project, especially in helping TxDOT after an 18-wheeler crashed not far from our job site.”
Commonly known as Go 10, the four-year reconstruction spanned nearly six miles. It included building collector-distributor (CD) lanes throughout the corridor, improving direct connection with Paisano Drive and Border West Expressway, adding lanes in both directions and reconfiguring ramps and overpasses at three major exits. With the new CD lanes, when emergencies do occur, they will allow first responders better access and more room to address incidents.
The new CD lanes, by definition, collect and distribute vehicles in a more efficient manner, reducing the need for merging and eliminating unnecessary entrance and exit points. Nonstop traffic will be able to pass through, while drivers entering and exiting will be able to do so unencumbered, reducing the risk of accidents. Worth nearly $160 million, GO 10 is the largest hard-bid project to date for TxDOT’s El Paso district.
In August of 2018, the project team assisted TxDOT after an 18-wheeler crashed into a utility bridge on the I-10. The accident occurred outside the CD lanes project limits, but the crew’s proximity to the site allowed for them to assist and restore a critical part of the city’s infrastructure in two days.
Over the past 10 years, Sundt has completed over a billion dollars in project work in the El Paso region. Currently, the company is working on the I-10 Connect projects, as well as four projects for the Housing Authority of the City of El Paso (HACEP), including the revitalization on the historic Blue Flame building in downtown El Paso.
