Sundt Names John Messick Vice President and Regional Director

 |  Press Release

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Oct. 11, 2016) – Sundt Construction, Inc., (www.sundt.com) has promoted longtime Sundt employee John Messick to vice president and San Diego regional director, replacing former Sundt executive Jon Wald, who retired earlier this month after 26 years with the company.

As San Diego regional director, Messick is responsible for advancing Sundt’s strategic growth throughout San Diego.

Messick, a 27-year industry veteran, enters his new leadership role with more than 25 years of experience working with Sundt, specializing in projects that incorporate Lean practices, building information modeling (BIM), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and other sustainability initiatives. Throughout his career, he has been an industry advocate of processes and tools that enhance collaboration and reduce waste, and has built up extensive experience using alternative project delivery methods, including design-build, lease-leaseback and CM multiple-prime.

Messick’s wide-ranging work experience is matched only by his active industry involvement, which includes his role as a graduate with California’s Coalition for Adequate School Housing (CASH), an organization that promotes, develops, and supports state and local funding for K-12 construction. In addition to being recognized as Project Manager of the Year by the American Subcontractors Association, he is a LEED Accredited Professional with the U.S. Green Building Council, certified Designated Design-Build Professional with the Design-Build Institute of America and is a certified Constructor with the American Institute of Constructors.

Wald joined Sundt in 1990 and has since managed several of the company’s Building Division offices, including its offices in Phoenix, Tucson, Sacramento and San Diego. During his tenure on the senior management team, corporate revenues grew from $425 million in 1997 to more than $1 billion in 2010.  He has participated on panels for the qualifications-based selection of contractors on projects utilizing alternative project delivery methods, and has been an advisor for the San Diego Airport Authority on its ongoing Capital Improvement Program.

In addition to his professional experience, Wald has been active in the community supporting nonprofits in metro San Diego through the Sundt Foundation, an employee-funded organization. He was past chairman of the Associated General Contractors/San Diego Airport Liaison Committee, a member of the San Diego Economic Development Corporation Public Policy and Infrastructure Committee, and board member for the Design-Build Institute of America Western-Pacific Region.
