Sundt Promotes Skills Training for Urban Schools

 |  Press Release

SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 12, 2016) -Sundt Construction, Inc. (www.sundt.com) is committed to creating opportunities in the construction and engineering industry for high school students in urban school districts in San Antonio. Sundt has been involved in community initiatives such as the Architecture, Construction and Engineering (ACE) Mentor Program at Lanier High School to address the workforce development shortages. In addition, Sundt has completed work on three educational facilities for the San Antonio Independent School District including Brackenridge, Burbank and Lanier High Schools.

“These projects are important because the new facilities provide much needed space and state-of-the-art equipment for career training during high school,” said Sundt Project Manager Ben Martin. “The schools now have adequate space and equipment to properly train high school students in a variety of careers to prepare them upon graduation.”

For the past four years, Sundt has been a member of the ACE Mentor Program. The program was founded in 2006 and strives to help high school students explore potential careers in architecture, engineering and construction. This year, Martin will take the lead mentor role at Lanier High School. He will help lead students to develop a mock project starting with concept development, producing drawings and creating a budget for the project to mirror aspects of building a real project from start to finish. In addition, Martin will coordinate the project build with the teacher and work with other industry professionals to help drive the project.

“These students are our future leaders and we are proud to be a part of this great program that is making a positive impact in our community,” said Corporate Strategic Business Officer John Carlson.

In addition, Sundt has also opened its own training center for craft employees in Phoenix, Arizona. The Center for Craft Excellence was created to address labor shortages and enable Sundt’s craft employee-owners to enhance their skills and perform highly technical work. Multiple opportunities are afforded to workers at the center such as Standard Craft Training, Journey-Level Skills Assessment as well as Certified Plus.

Sundt has a history of more than 45 years and nearly $2 billion of project work throughout the Lone Star State. Among the general contractor’s notable Texas projects are the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) 911 Dispatch Center, San Antonio; the Career and Technology Education (CATE) building at Brackenridge High School, San Antonio; Warrior in Transition Barracks at Fort Sam Houston, Fort Bliss and Fort Hood; the Wichita Falls Regional Airport terminal, the West Seventh Street Bridge, Fort Worth; Reunion Tower, Dallas; Legacy Town Centers, Plano; and work at Austin Bergstrom International Airport.
