Sundt Completes Courthouse in Hanford, Calif.

 |  Press Release

HANFORD, Calif. (Apr. 1, 2016) – Sundt Construction, Inc. (www.sundt.com) recently joined California court leaders, Kings County officials, and representatives of the Judicial Council of California (JCC), to celebrate the completion of the new courthouse for the Superior Court of King’s County in Hanford, California.

Sundt served as Construction Manager at risk for the project, which replaced the court’s outdated facilities with a new 144,460-square-foot building, consolidating all court operations in a modern, secure, full-service courthouse. Located in Hanford’s civic center, the courthouse is Sundt’s fifth capital project for California’s judicial branch. The building, at $86 million in construction cost, features 12 courtrooms, a jury assembly room, and an underground tunnel connecting to the nearby county jail for transportation of detainees.

In addition to accommodating criminal, civil, juvenile and family law cases, the four-story courthouse design incorporates the addition of several thoughtful features, including a self-help center and family court mediation rooms.

“We worked closely with the JCC and architect DLR Group to deliver a carefully designed, well-constructed courthouse that is secure, and offers separation between court officials, inmates, visitors, victims and other members of the public conducting business,” said Sundt Senior Vice President Cody Pearson. “We also incorporated many green features, including an energy-efficient ‘thermal mass’ HVAC system that will make ice at night, when energy rates are lowest, and use the ice to cool the building during the day.”

A number of sustainable features are expected to help the courthouse construction project qualify for LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
