Two Sundt Projects Receive Environmental Excellence Awards from Arizona Forward

 |  Press Release

TUCSON, Ariz. (Nov. 2, 2015) – Two projects by Sundt Construction, Inc. (www.sundt.com) – the University of Arizona Old Main renovation and Arizona State University Sun Devil Fitness Complex construction – were recognized recently at Arizona Forward’s 35th Annual Environmental Excellence Awards.

Known as the Academy Awards of the environmental community, the Arizona Forward Environmental Excellence Awards represent Arizona’s oldest and most prestigious awards competition of its kind, focusing exclusively on sustainability. More than 120 entries were received in a range of categories, and 17 first-place Crescordia awards and 31 Awards of Merit were awarded at a recent award ceremony.

Old Main received a Crescordia award, while the Sun Devil Fitness Complex was recognized as a Merit award winner.

Sundt led the design-build team on the $9.7 million Old Main rehabilitation project in Tucson, Arizona, which preserved Arizona’s second oldest continuously occupied building. In conjunction with maintaining the “territorial hybrid” design and historical integrity of the 124-year-old structure, Sundt’s team upgraded the building to meet current safety codes and successfully integrated modern interior finishes with the historical elements of this landmark structure. The team also installed a new mechanical system, reinforced and repaired deteriorating building elements and leveled the second floor structure.

The completed project earned LEED Silver Certification and has earned additional awards including two from the Arizona Preservation Foundation and one from the Design-Build Institute of America Western Pacific Region.

Originally built in 1891, Old Main is the oldest building on The University of Arizona campus.

Meanwhile, Sundt worked with Gabor Lorant Architects to construct the new Sun Devil Fitness Complex at Arizona State University’s downtown Phoenix campus. The complex combines academic and recreation spaces in a five-story structure connected to the YMCA at its first floor.

Academic functions include classrooms, labs and wellness programs. A rooftop swimming pool, multi-purpose gymnasium, jogging track, and cardio/fitness/weight-training spaces also are housed in the facility, which has achieved LEED Gold Certification from the United States Green Building Council.
