It takes talent to recognize talent, which is why Trevor Gelder is so good at what he does. Trevor is Sundt’s new Corporate Director of Talent Acquisition and Deployment, a position he is well suited for after spending many years in human resources and human capital management. We welcomed Trevor to the team with our customary barrage of questions:

What led you to Sundt?

I already knew a little about Sundt, but after learning more about the company – the vision and in particular the need for a robust Talent Acquisition and Deployment function – I felt it was a perfect fit, so I accepted the challenge and it’s been great so far.

What unique challenges and/or opportunities does the construction industry face with regard to talent acquisition and retention?

As the economy continues to gain momentum and more opportunities become available, the challenge in recruiting and retaining top talent will continue to increase. We’ll need to continue building our employment brand to differentiate Sundt and continue to invest in the development of our employee-owners while identifying unique ways to attract all levels of professionals in the war for talent.

What’s the best career advice you ever received?

I’ve received a lot over the years, but a few phrases that come to mind are, “Embrace challenges and learn from your experiences,” “Treat others as you want to be treated,” and “A good manager is one who isn’t worried about their own career but rather the career of those who work for them.”

How do you like to spend your free time?

As a father of three children under age five, my wife and I are busy keeping up with them but we enjoy being outdoors or trying to keep in shape with Crossfit.

What was your favorite movie when you were a kid?

I’m going to have to say Field of Dreams.

What is your favorite book or television show as an adult?

A book I read a couple years ago was one of my favorites: “Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy’s Astounding Story of His Trip To Heaven and Back”.

Where would you most like to travel?

I would like to do an African safari at some point.

Favorite place to eat in Phoenix?

There are a lot of great places to eat, but I really like Orient Sushi and Grill in Gilbert…it has great sushi and pad Thai!
