Sundt Begins Construction on Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities New Water Reclamation Facility

 |  Press Release, Water Treatment

SALT LAKE CITY (December 18, 2019) – Sundt Construction, Inc. recently started work on the new Water Reclamation Facility for Salt Lake City’s Department of Public Utilities. Located in northern Salt Lake City, this critical facility will serve more than 200,000 customers over a 110-square-mile service area when it is complete in 2024. The $528 million facility is one of the largest public works projects ever undertaken by Salt Lake City.

The new, state-of-the-art facility will replace the current 55-year-old facility that treats 33 million gallons per day of wastewater and is the City’s only wastewater treatment plant. It was vital that the aging facilities be replaced to continue providing the citizens and businesses in Salt Lake City reliable service for decades to come. The project includes the construction of new facilities, as well as the decommissioning and removal of some existing elements. In addition to meeting all current building and seismic codes, the new treatment plant includes the addition of a biological nutrient removal (BNR) process designed to reduce phosphorus in the wastewater to comply with current and anticipated future regulations in a sustainable and efficient manner.

“Sundt is excited to be part of the team to deliver the new water reclamation facility,” said Greg Ayres, Vice President for Sundt’s Industrial Group. “This facility is vital to the growing Salt Lake City community and will provide reliable and cost-effective treatment solutions for decades to come.”

The City recently held a groundbreaking ceremony where Mayor Jackie Biskupski used an excavator to deposit the first load of broken-up concrete into a dump truck to signal the beginning of the project. The current facility will continue operating without interruption during construction.

Sundt has been a trusted builder for water and wastewater treatment plant projects since 1948, with more than 60 projects in the last 15 years. This water reclamation facility project continues Sundt’s history of expanding and improving infrastructure in the Beehive State. Most recently the company completed the Redwood Road and I-215 Interchange project in North Salt Lake. Other notable past projects include runway work at the Salt Lake City International Airport and improvements at the Michael Army Airfield at Dugway Proving Ground.
