The first concrete pour for the foundation of the new Maple Street Correctional Center occured last week.

Sundt and joint venture partner Layton Construction performed the first of several concrete pours last week for a jail construction project in Redwood City, Calif. The team placed 150 cubic yards of concrete for part of the foundation of the new Maple Street Correctional Center for San Mateo County. Concrete pours will continue to occur weekly until December 20th for a total of 3,500 cubic yards.

“We’re heading into the wet season here, so staying ahead of the rain is our priority,” said Sundt/Layton Project Manager Kristy Weiland. “Our strategy is to place concrete almost immediately after putting rebar in any excavations, because it’s a lot harder to clean mud out of excavations once they have rebar in them.”

The $126 million criminal justice project consists of 93,250 square feet of administration and support space, 20,000 square feet of transitional housing, and 139,132 square feet of detention center. It includes a full service kitchen, laundry, clinic, and video visitation.

Sundt/Layton is scheduled to complete the project in August 2015.
