Project Overview
This project for the City of Peoria enhances drainage protection and expands the roadway from Pinnacle Peak Road to Happy Valley Road. The highly trafficked area is essential for access to Peoria with connections to major Arizona metro hubs Glendale and Phoenix.
The project widens 67th Avenue to three travel lanes in each direction, expanding the existing roadway with an additional lane with bike lanes and raised median islands. To aid in ease of travel, dual left turn lanes were built on the south and west legs of the intersection. The project converted the overhead Arizona Public Service power lines to underground utilities, requiring immense coordination with APS and other utility provider.
This major upgrade to the intersection aims to reduce drainage issues in the area during heavy rains. The 90-inch pipes installed under 67th Avenue mitigate excess stormwater runoff, which reached nearly six feet of flooding before the upgrades. The Sundt team used a “hairpin” attachment for heavy machinery to install these pipes and completely self-performed the pipe installation.
