Project Overview

For the Airport Support Facilities at San Diego International Airport (SDIA), Sundt upgraded and consolidated operations from several existing buildings and relocated several airport operations away This was the first step in SDIA’s Airport Development Plan.

Sundt constructed four new buildings and a 3.2-million-gallon underground stormwater containment cistern over the span of two years. The project required precise scheduling and coordination by the team since the work was spread across three separate sites and separated by an active runway.

The 3.2-million-gallon underground stormwater containment cistern was built and designed to capture runoff from nearly 80 acres of airport property. Sundt’s concrete team went through more than eight months of pre-planning to meet the high technical requirements for concrete material and its performance for constructing the cistern. The team had to cool the concrete down by 25 degrees F, which was only possible by injecting nitrogen into the mix. The ASF project team cooled the concrete on-site with two cooling stations near an active runway. The team mixed enough nitrogen-cooled concrete to fill an entire Olympic swimming pool. The cistern annually will capture and reuse approximately 16 million gallons of water. The reused water is used to wash cars at the car rental center.

The team constructed a 71,054-square foot Facilities Management Department (FMD) campus north of the runway. It consisted of an 11,346-square foot, state-of-the-art administration building with offices, conference rooms, a training room that serves as a backup emergency operations center, and a 59,708-square foot maintenance shop, warehouse and provisioning building. Additionally, on the northside, Sundt built a 6,742-square foot Airline Fueling Operations building housing administration spaces for the airline consortium’s fueling operator and maintenance bays for the airline fuel trucks. Sundt built an 83,922-square-foot Airline Support Building south of the runway that houses offices, maintenance and provisioning, and belly cargo spaces for multiple airlines. Tenant improvement buildouts were also completed within this building for United, Delta and American Airlines.
