Sundt is currently building a 130,000-square-foot Innovation Center at Port San Antonio, a large technology and innovation campus just southwest of downtown San Antonio. The state-of-the-art facility will feature multiple components, beginning with a 2,500-person multipurpose arena on the building’s southeast side, which will host various events including concerts, electronic gaming tournaments, technology competitions and trade shows.
Other components include a new home for the San Antonio Museum of Science and Technology (SAMSAT), a showroom to demonstrate technological innovations, and a large 24-hour electronic gaming area and full-scale food hall. Also, the facility will feature a “maker space” laboratory, which will provide scalable space and prototyping/fabrication equipment to support universities, startup ventures and mature industry sectors in their collaborative research and development efforts.
From the start, Sundt has kept pace with project deadlines, including site work during which crews placed 62,000 tons of aggregate base to complete the 109,000-square-foot building pad, an activity planned to take a month but completed within a week with double shifts. As construction goes vertical, technology integrated throughout the facility will give it global reach. Features include teleconferencing systems for greater collaboration among public and private research entities. The building will also be equipped with broadcasting capabilities to stream entertainment and other content developed at the innovation center in real time to audiences that could number in the millions.
The Innovation Center is located in the heart of the 1,900-acre Port San Antonio campus, home to over 80 employers and their more than 14,000 employees that include leading names in aerospace, cybersecurity, robotics, defense, and other advanced operations. The Port’s Board of Directors approved the project in August 2020, and completion is expected in early 2022.
