Project Overview

To support the launch of Phoenix’s first light rail system, Sundt, in a joint venture with Stacy Witbeck, constructed the METRO Maintenance & Storage Facility (MSF)—the critical hub for the entire Valley Metro network. Spanning 35 acres, this complex houses all operations, vehicle assembly, heavy maintenance, and system communications for the entire rail corridor. The centerpiece Maintenance of Equipment building, a 138,000-square-foot, three-level structure, includes full-service repair bays, advanced crane systems, and in-floor hoist technology designed for streamlined train service and assembly.

Construction of the MSF required major civil infrastructure, including 3.7 miles of ballasted track, dual bridge structures, 17,000+ linear feet of storm drains, and extensive underground utilities. The project also featured a 30,000-square-foot Maintenance of Way building and 12,000 square feet dedicated to train cleaning and washing facilities. Delivered under a traditional design-bid-build model, Sundt worked proactively with the newly formed Valley Metro to overcome design, permitting, and coordination challenges, adopting a design-build mindset to accelerate schedules and ensure readiness for the arrival of 50 light rail vehicles.

Despite complex logistics, FAA height restrictions due to proximity to Sky Harbor Airport, and a multi-national vendor team, the project was delivered on time to meet key operational deadlines. Sundt self-performed 42% of the work, including structural and site concrete and track installation, allowing for maximum schedule control. The project was lauded for its quality, innovation, and client-focused execution, ultimately saving the owner several million dollars through collaborative problem-solving and value engineering.

“Sundt has completed three large projects for METRO and has been selected for a fourth. The company has worked very hard to meet METRO’s expectations and has more than met them. I cannot think of any area of performance that METRO was not completely satisfied with Sundt’s overall performance. The management and staff at the company are skilled and professional. The quality of construction work is award-winning. The follow-through after construction is some of the best we have seen at METRO. We have will continue to look to Sundt to perform future work for METRO.”
