Project Overview
Sundt returns to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) for construction of the Strategic Academic Flight Education (S.A.F.E.) building, a 20,000-square-foot training building. To address the country’s shortage of skilled pilots, the $10 million building will allow for increased training and development for aviation. The project includes the ground-up construction of a new two-story aircraft hangar with enough room to perform maintenance for two Cessna aircraft and attached classrooms, flight planning and debriefing rooms, TSA checkpoint, multiple flight simulators and offices/conference rooms.
Construction is underway three miles from the ERAU campus, on the grounds of Ernest A. Love Field in Prescott, Arizona. Building in conjunction with an active airport requires open communication among Sundt, airport personnel, and ERAU to ensure everything runs smoothly. It is essential for the team to overcommunicate while connecting new utility systems, both landside and airside, and avoid interfering with any airport operations on the airside as they constructed the concrete tilt panel structure next to the new parking area.
Once complete, the facility will allow students to receive classroom instruction, log practice flight hours, get feedback on their performance, and perform aircraft maintenance all in one place.
