Features & Highlights
- First of its kind direct-to-distribution potable reuse water facility
- Will treat approximately 10 million gallons per day (MGD) of effluent, with room to expand
- Operational flexibility allows it to run at a base flow mode of approximately 3.3-MGD during months with low water demand
- New on-site, high-service pump station
Project Overview
The El Paso Water Pure Water Center is an advanced water purification facility (AWPF) that will treat recycled water from the Roberto Bustamante Wastewater Treatment Plant. This is the first direct-to-distribution potable reuse project in El Paso Water’s portfolio.
The recycled water will be purified through a multistep treatment process. The core treatment train includes microfiltration (low pressure) membranes, reverse osmosis (high pressure) membranes, ultraviolet/hydrogen peroxide advanced oxidation process, granular activated carbon for hydrogen peroxide quenching and chlorine disinfection. The facility is designed to treat approximately 10.7 million gallons per day (MGD) of effluent, with possible future expansion.
In addition to treatment, the Pure Water Center will also have a public education space with interactive displays and visuals to learn more about water sources, environmental stewardship, water treatment and quality. Visitors to the educational facility will be able to view parts of the purification process and visit a water-tasting station that provides direct access to the purified water.
