Project Overview

Sundt completed construction on the Arizona Department of Transportation’s (ADOT) Interstate 40 (I-40) West Flagstaff TI bridge replacement project. The project replaced the existing three-span concrete bridge in both eastbound and westbound directions and added a new single-precast concrete bridge. Additionally, the project team widened the approach roadway and replaced the guardrail and pavement markings in both directions. The upgrades improve safety and will meet future traffic demands.

This project was initially designed as a three-year endeavor. Sundt provided an accelerated schedule to complete the project within two years and worked closely with ADOT to ensure the I-40 remained open during the entire project in both directions. With the design bid build (DBB) delivery method, the project team combined both east and westbound bridge construction simultaneously. This allowed Sundt to complete this three-season project in only two and provide the client with a much lower cost.

During excavation of the new footing, the team discovered that the rock line was not at its assumed elevation.  Sundt worked with the designer and ADOT to develop a solution for excavating to competent rock, backfilling the excavation with a lean concrete material to the bottom of the footing, and then constructing the footing.  This minimized the amount of change required; Sundt provided a fast design and execution of the supportive earthwork necessitated by this increased excavation depth.

“On the I-40 West Flagstaff TI bridge replacement project, Sundt managed the project schedule and delivered a quality project in one and a half construction seasons, when it was originally planned for two and a half construction seasons. Sundt’s organization, willingness to increase effort, and ability to quickly and fairly work through problems was much appreciated.”
