Admin Training & Development Manager

As Training & Development Manager, Scott LaPoint is responsible for supporting his team as they develop and deliver training programs to more than 1,000 employee-owners across the country.

Scott began his career as a carpenter 30 years ago and worked his way up in the construction industry, acquiring expertise in field supervision, estimating, project management, business development and multiple roles in construction leadership. He started at Sundt in 2018 as a senior project engineer, then moved into training and development as a senior talent development specialist.

Scott serves as a career coach, guiding employee-owners on career progression plans and goals. He is also committed to community service through his volunteer work leading life skills classes for Phoenix nonprofits and is president of the Sundt Foundation board.

Tell us about your favorite Sundt project.

Sundt Construction is committed to not only building structures but also developing our most valuable asset: our people. One of my favorite projects that exemplifies this commitment is the Manager Effectiveness Training Program. Talent Development has partnered with our HR, Talent Acquisition (TA), and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) teams, to craft a comprehensive training experience that truly makes an impact. In this program, we dive into essential topics that equip our managers with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in their roles for the people that they manage. This program isn’t just about imparting knowledge; it’s about creating a community of informed leaders.

Why did you choose to work in the construction industry?

At 21 years old, I found myself a young father of three, fresh out of the military and navigating life with limited formal education. I had no relevant experience in the civilian world, and honestly, I was feeling a bit lost. My initial foray into the construction industry wasn’t exactly a grand choice, it was more of a necessity. The construction industry gave me exactly what I needed: A chance to prove myself, to support my family and to build a future. I fell in love with building structures and eventually developed a passion for building up people and their careers. I knew I’d found a place I wanted to stay. Today, my role in the construction industry looks different from what I imagined. I may not be on the front lines in the field anymore, but I take pride in my support role. I’ve learned that building isn’t just about physical structures — it’s about fostering relationships, creating opportunities and contributing to a team that transforms visions into reality. I’m proud to say I’ve been a builder for most of my adult life, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

What is your favorite place in the world?

When asked about my favorite place in the world, the answer isn’t a far-off destination or a scenic getaway. No, it’s much closer to home. My favorite place is my home on Christmas Day, surrounded by my beautiful bride, our seven children, and 10 grandchildren. It’s a day filled with love, laughter and the joy of family — a true blessing that I cherish every year.
