Skilled craft professionals have never been more in demand. According to a workforce analysis by Associated Builders and Contractors, an estimated 349,000 new workers need to be added to the construction workforce in 2026 to keep pace with the need for construction services. Sundt saw this skills gap over decades and addressed the problem head on by creating an industry-leading apprenticeship program.

Certified by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) as an Accredited Training Sponsor and Accredited Assessment Center, our craft employee-owners can receive training and certifications to further their careers. Our apprenticeships are structured to accommodate their jobsite schedules so that they can continue to work and are paid with a full benefits package while gaining apprenticeship experience. Sundt covers travel and lodging costs for apprentices to come together for one week of training each quarter. At the end of their program, each graduating apprentice will receive an Apprenticeship Completion Certificate from the State of Arizona as well as NCCER. Our apprenticeship programs have grown from 58 apprentices in 2024 to over 330 apprentices at the start of 2026, and we have no plans of slowing down now.

We take this approach so we can fit additional training into our employee-owners’ busy lives. Codi Crane, a heavy equipment operator apprentice and mom in Texas, calls our apprenticeship program a “game-changer.” It allows her to continue her education without disrupting her work schedule and without requiring too much time away from her family. Supporting our employee-owners in both their career development and their personal lives is an enormous part of the Sundt’s culture.
We also believe that employee-owners of all backgrounds should be given equal opportunity to develop their careers. With grant money through Governor Katie Hobbs’ BuildItAZ initiative, we were able to invest in a new apprenticeship program taught entirely in Spanish in 2025. This removes the barrier for employee-owners who speak English as a second language or are more comfortable learning in Spanish.

Additionally, Sundt has partnered with a variety of schools to help develop students interested in pursuing a career in the trades. These programs help students see the variety of paths they’re able to go down in construction.

Gracias a los fondos de la iniciativa BuildItAZ de la gobernadora Katie Hobbs, pudimos invertir en un nuevo programa de aprendizaje impartido íntegramente en español [CG4.1][BR4.2] en 2025. Esto elimina la barrera para los empleados-propietarios que hablan inglés como segundo idioma o que se sienten más cómodos aprendiendo en español.
Además, Sundt se ha asociado con diversas instituciones educativas para ayudar a desarrollar a los estudiantes interesados en seguir una carrera en oficios. Estos programas ayudan a los estudiantes a ver la variedad de caminos que pueden seguir en la construcción. Durante esta Semana Nacional del Aprendizaje, celebramos el arduo trabajo y la dedicación que nuestros aprendices de oficios han aportado a Sundt.
