Construction Starts on Southern Arizona’s Largest Highway Project

Sundt-Jacobs to lead three-year transportation project to improve safety and traffic congestion in Tucson.

TUCSON, Ariz. (August 28, 2025) – The Sundt-Jacobs team began construction on the I-10: Kino to Country Club project in Tucson for the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The $600 million project, the largest transportation project in Southern Arizona history, will help to improve safety and traffic flow, address traffic congestion and reconstruct the traffic interchanges at Kino Parkway and Country Club Road.

The construction team will reconstruct I-10 to three lanes from east of Park Avenue to Alvernon Way, reconstruct the traffic interchange at I-10 and Kino Parkway, construct a new traffic interchange at I-10 and Country Club Road, and build a new westbound entrance ramp at Alvernon Way and a new I-10 undercrossing to connect the North and South Kino Sports Complex.

For the first phase of the project this summer, the team has focused on a ‘make-ready’ phase, including construction of a new westbound on-ramp at the Alvernon interchange and re-configuring the Kino Parkway ramps.  Next month, the project team will begin construction in the median, including a 60-foot-wide pavement section with median barrier for eastbound and westbound traffic.  The inside half of each eastbound and westbound bridge along the main line will be constructed. The project is anticipated to continue through 2028.
