Sundt & Gila River Hotels & Casinos Celebrates Topping Off

CHANDLER, Ariz. (January 15, 2020) – Sundt Construction, Inc., recently celebrated the topping off of the new 11-story hotel tower at Gila River Hotels & Casinos – Wild Horse Pass. A topping off is the ceremonial placement of a building’s highest structural feature. The new building will connect to its existing hotel, doubling its guestroom capacity. The new guest tower is a piece of the property’s $143 million expansion and renovation.

“The topping off of this new tower acknowledges the dedication and hard work by our project team,” said Mike Nunn, Sundt’s Project Executive. “It is one step closer for the Gila River Indian Community to enhance this property and show its commitment to preserving its culture.”

The new hotel tower includes 205 guestrooms, for a total of 447 guestrooms on the property. The new building will feature a rooftop restaurant and a new lounge area. The expansion will also add 22,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting space at Wild Horse Pass. This past summer, the project renovated the casino floor to include new carpeting, an updated color palette, revamped restrooms, lighting fixtures and a LED screen overhanging the floor. The project will also feature adding new amenities, including a large oasis pool, an adult pool and two hot tubs alongside a pool bar and grill.

“This expansion is a major investment in the Gila River Indian Community and symbolic of a new chapter in our history,” said Gila River Hotels & Casinos CEO Kenneth Manuel. “It reflects our commitment to be a leader in the gaming and hospitality industry through enhanced experiences and amenities, and we look forward to seeing the continued representation of our community’s culture in the expansion project.”

The project broke ground in late 2019 and is estimated to open in the fall of 2021. The Las Vegas based Friedmutter Group served as the architect.

Sundt has been building critical infrastructure across Arizona for more than 90 years. Headquartered in Tempe, the company continually ranks in the top five of ENR Southwest’s Top Contractors. Besides the expansion at Wild Horse Pass, Sundt’s current work in the Valley includes the expansion of the Royal Oaks Community.
