With the Arizona State football squad’s regular season completed, it’s time for the Sundt team to take the field again at Sun Devil Stadium.

For the second consecutive year, our joint venture with Hunt Construction is working on an overhaul of the stadium, which opened in 1958. The work has had little effect on the football program and fans: the team played all seven of its home games at Sun Devil Stadium during the 2015 season.

Next month, the construction team will start working on the east and west sidelines of the lower bowl. Demolition work has already begun to clear space for a new student-athlete facility.

“Working on the stadium during and between football seasons has been a fantastic challenge, one that our entire team thrives on solving,” said Sundt Vice President Ryan Abbott. “Now I’ll tell you that at times it felt like trying to change the car tire while it was driving down the road.”

The university construction project is poised to redefine stadiums in the Pac 12 Conference with more amenities including a new concourse, better seating, more restrooms, a new student-athlete facility, premium seating, better training facilities, improved concessions, a top-flight video board and sound system, extensive accessibility improvements, an air-conditioned club and in-stadium technology for fan enjoyment and education.

The stadium was home of the Fiesta Bowl for 35 years and the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals for 18 seasons. It hosted Super Bowl XXX in 1996 when the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers.
