Biography

Since becoming Sundt’s Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of its Board of Directors, Mike Hoover has led the company’s transformation into one of the country’s largest and most skilled general contractors.

Under Mike’s leadership, the company’s annual revenue has nearly tripled since 2015 and its geographic reach has expanded from just four states to nearly two dozen. At the same time, the company earned its highest ranking since 2011 in Engineering News Record’s (ENR) Top 400 Contractor list. ENR, the construction industry’s principal trade publication, generates its list of Top 400 Contractors based on the prior year’s construction revenue.

In 2020, Mike led Sundt’s expansion into renewable energy construction by acquiring a leader in the renewable power market and forming Sundt Renewables, LLC. The following year, the company opened a new office in Charlotte, N.C., to capitalize on the expansion of industrial construction opportunities.

Before moving into his leadership role in October 2016, Mike served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer managing the company’s transportation, mining and industrial, concrete, building, safety and quality control groups. Under his leadership, the company expanded into new markets, including Irvine, Calif.; Salt Lake City, Utah; Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas and Charlotte, N.C.

Sundt is known for giving back to the communities where its employee-owners live and work through the Sundt Foundation. Mike has continued that tradition of generosity, leading the company to cross the $11 million mark in donations made to hundreds of nonprofit organizations across the country.

Mike earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz., and joined Sundt fulltime shortly thereafter. During high school he spent his summers working on various Sundt jobsites, making him one of the few construction industry leaders to work their way up from laborer to executive.

Mike’s belief in giving back to his community and the construction industry is evidenced by his involvement in a wide range of organizations. In 2018 he served as President of The Beavers, a national heavy civil organization. Mike currently sits on the board of directors for The Road Information Program (TRIP) and is a member of the Construction Industry Round Table, an association of chief executive officers of America’s leading design and construction companies. He is also a Board member of Greater Phoenix Leadership, an organization of leading CEOs, and a contributing member of the Council on Competitiveness.
