Eric Cylwik

Director of Innovation

As Sundt’s Director of Innovation, Eric drives organizational alignment and enables employees at all levels to build better than they did yesterday. He started his career in construction 18 years ago while pursuing a degree in design studies with an emphasis in digital visualization from Arizona State University.

Acknowledging construction’s need to adapt to a changing world, Eric has focused on adapting technologies for Sundt using real-time speech translators, virtual models of projects, and drones on every Sundt project.

These technologies increase the value Sundt provides and decrease repetitive tasks. Eric presents on construction technologies for industry groups, has been honored as an innovative leader in the industry and written articles for Engineering News-Record and Civil Engineering News. He serves on the board of Tempe Community Action Agency, supporting economically disadvantaged people in his community.

Tell us about your favorite Sundt project.

That’s almost as bad as asking about my favorite kid; they’re all special and unique! That being said, Sellwood Bridge was an ambitious project on many fronts. It was our first large job in the Portland area, a long bridge over an active river, our first use of LiDAR (3d laser scanning) technology, and I was able to use some of our advanced civil modeling tools to support the job. I love that our CFO had to speak with an insurance broker about the risk of moving an existing bridge by 30 feet, and we employed goats to help maintain the landscape. Sundt’s never been shy about approaching complex construction projects, and the topography on Sellwood always stands out.

Why did you choose to work in the construction industry?

My first role at Sundt was creating digital 3D models of construction sequences to clearly explain to clients what our plan was and why that was important. I had this fantastic opportunity to listen to our proposal teams debate construction methods and sequences, trying to find the best way to build new projects. Construction felt so pliable and creative. I have always loved visiting projects we won and seeing the construction process, which I visualized on the computer. My initial love for technology and 3D visualization software drew me in, but the more time I spent on jobs, the more I fell in love with construction.

What is your favorite place in the world?

Growing up, my family visited Estes Park, Colorado every summer. It’s a small town in Colorado, right on Rocky Mountain National Park. It is an amazing place to escape the summer heat of Phoenix, spend time hiking and fishing in the mountains and enjoy the pace of life in a smaller town. Preparing for hiking a few weeks up at altitude has been a fun challenge, and a few years ago, I hiked Longs Peak, one of the peaks above 14,000 feet in Colorado.
