Project Overview

Sundt is building the I-10 Connect project, a large-scale reconstruction effort that will make the final adjustments for smoother traffic flow between the TxDOT El Paso loop systems. The total $96 million undertaking will eliminate a major traffic weave by separating US 54 and US-110. This upgrade will make it easier for motorists to use Loop 375 as an alternative to Interstate 10 via US 54. The I-10, in turn, is anticipated to undergo significant reconstruction in Downtown, Central and East El Paso in the coming years.

The current configuration on I-110 leading to the port of entry sees excessive backups during peak hours, resulting in spillbacks onto the U.S. 54 and the I-10 connector ramps, as well as backups into residential areas. The upgraded and added infrastructure will add capacity and help to address these issues. The project scope includes the construction of 16 new bridges, earthwork, reinforced concrete paving, removal of 12 existing bridges, retaining walls, intelligent transportation system (ITS), a drainage pump station and various other site improvements.

Thus far, the project team has overcome the challenges of working within a constrained area surrounded by businesses, schools, a zoo, and a national park. Part of this process has been working alongside TxDOT to preserve culturally and historically significant landmarks, including a number of murals by local artists, to respond to the local community’s desires to preserve sites that represent Chicano heritage.
