Tell us about your favorite KAPBCS moment.

Delivering a $2,500 Sundt Foundation check to the Arizona Adaptive Water Sports (AAWS) association. This organization provides programming opportunities for disabled athletes who want to experience water sports such as boating, tubing, water skiing, wakeboarding and wake surfing. I’ve volunteered my vessel and fuel a few times and have enjoyed watching these athletes and families out on the water. The joy in their expressions is worth every dollar and minute donated and delivering that check to help fund their scholarship program for disabled athletes was a really KAPBCS moment.

Tell us about your favorite Sundt project.

My favorite Sundt project was the first opportunity presented to me when I joined the company in 2013. Sundt was selected as the CMAR on a dam rehabilitation project for the Maricopa County Flood Control District. It was a joint venture with an industry partner that I have a lot of respect for. I had pursued this project at my former firm, and we were unsuccessful. My first day at Sundt, I was given the opportunity to manage the preconstruction phase. The project owner was the Flood Control District and funded in part by the National Resource Conservation Service and permitted by the Arizona Department of Water Resources. There were a lot of stakeholders involved, and it provided increased flood protection for thousands of residents in the West Valley of the Phoenix metro. The project was completed successfully and received the Marvin M. Black Partnering Award, the American Council of Engineering Companies Engineering Excellence Award, and the American Public Works Association AZ Chapter Project of the Year Award in 2018.

What movie or television character do you relate to most and why?

John McClane from Die Hard. He’s an ordinary guy but when put in extremely stressful situations, he’s able to do extraordinary things.

Why did you choose to work in the construction industry?

I have an analytical mind. I tend to over-think things, and that is a good personality trait when approaching complex construction projects. Developing the right plan, double-checking that plan and ensuring all the risk has been mitigated before you begin to build is essential. This is a great approach to help ensure a successful outcome. Now if I could just get past the over-thinking part…

Share a couple of your favorite hobbies.

Boating, pulling my kids on the water, snowboarding trips with the family, mountain biking, spending time with my mom and enjoying a great evening out with my beautiful bride.
