Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week with Andres Giron

 |  Sundt People, Workforce Development

Each November, Sundt celebrates National Apprenticeship Week, part of a nationwide celebration showcasing the value of registered apprenticeship programs. We checked in with Sundt Carpenter Apprentice Andres Giron, who will complete Sundt’s apprenticeship program in December, followed by the Sundt Foreman Development Program in 2023. Our Workforce Development programs give craft employee-owners the tools they need to build a lifelong career.

What motivated you to join Sundt’s apprenticeship program, and what are the benefits?

When I transitioned to the Concrete Division, I wanted to learn more about what it took to become a carpenter. After that, I realized I could make this job my career through Sundt’s Workforce Development programs. From the beginning of the course, learning basic math and formulas helped me improve my quality of work in the field. The course also covers leadership skills and gave me more confidence in that realm. Now, I feel like a role model in the field because I know I’m performing accurate work that’s safe and efficient, plus I’m comfortable motivating others to do the same.

What are your thoughts about the apprenticeship program’s curriculum?

The program has an effective balance of basic carpentry knowledge and hands-on field work. Austin Nalwood’s teaching is the key in the program, though; he goes beyond what the book offers and explains concepts using real-world examples. Because Austin has years of experience, there’s also an established trust between instructor and apprentices. The program is inclusive and approachable, and employee-owners learn the skills they need without judgment. We move through the material as a cohesive group and are invested in one another’s success.

“My favorite part about teaching is witnessing the impact the curriculum has on the apprentice’s career and knowing these skills will be shared in the field. The benefits of the program range from upgraded knowledge and recognition for their accomplishments to the opportunity for growth and an increase in pay.” -Austin Nalwood, Craft Training Instructor

How do you think completing the apprenticeship program will affect your career and quality of life?

These programs provide career advancement opportunities for me, and by extension, my family. Because of the well-rounded curriculum, I know I’ll carry this knowledge throughout my years at Sundt.

Why is it important for the industry to invest in workforce development efforts such as these?

It’s crucial for craft employee-owners to understand that they can make a lifelong career in the industry, and programs like these help achieve that goal. I believe Sundt really cares about their craft employee-owners, and they try everything possible to help us develop our skills.
