SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (October 19, 2020) – Sundt Construction, Inc. recently completed University of California, Santa Barbara’s Jeff and Judy Henley Hall, which houses the university’s Institute for Energy Efficiency.

“Our team has worked relentlessly to build a quality project for faculty and students,” said Betty Lynn Senes, Project Director for Sundt’s Building Group. “Providing the university with the capability to improve energy efficiency exemplifies Sundt’s commitment to building a more sustainable future.”

The 49,908-square-foot, three-story facility, designed by the architectural firm KieranTimberlake, includes a 128-seat lecture hall, 18 laboratories, 26 offices, conference rooms and group office spaces that accommodate 174 graduate students. The Dean of the College of Engineering, Rod Alferness, stated, “This leading-edge research space is critically important for the growth of engineering at UC Santa Barbara, where, through the research experience, we teach and mentor our students how to discover and innovate solutions to benefit society.”

The building design creates a prime research space and leading paradigms in energy efficiency. It features extensive natural lighting, adaptable laboratory space for evolving research needs, and intelligent energy monitoring and control systems with interactive displays. John Bowers, the Director of the Institute for Energy Efficiency, said, “This facility will enable extensive research into many aspects of energy efficiency, which is important for our country and our planet.”

The higher education project with a $50 million construction budget is targeting LEED® Platinum certification with LED lighting and 40% energy savings over similar lab buildings. Both lighting and windows adjust with the building control systems.

Sundt has over 70 years of project work throughout California and has worked extensively with the University of California (UC) system to develop collaborative and sustainable approaches to higher education projects. Much of the company’s work has helped the UC institutions achieve their goals for more sustainable campuses. One of many such examples is its work at the University of California, Davis, where Sundt constructed the campus’s first LEED Platinum® building with the Graduate School of Management. The company has offices in Orange County, San Diego and Sacramento.
