SACRAMENTO, Calif. (October 14, 2019) – Sundt Construction, Inc. recently participated in a dedication of the Ernest E. Tschannen Science Complex at California State University, Sacramento, located across from the Hornet Bookstore on State University Drive.

“We’re very proud of this complex,” said Sean Falvey, Sundt’s Senior Project Manager. “Our team really thought outside of the box on this project and came up with some unique solutions. We’re excited to see what innovation comes from within these walls.”

The $91 million state-of-the-art science complex involved the construction of a new five-story, 94,000-square-foot building to house both wet and dry biology labs and chemistry teaching and research labs. The instructional labs have vast expanses of glass adjacent to public corridors to display the work occurring inside. Additionally, the new facility provides indoor and outdoor student collaboration spaces and terraces, learning studios and classrooms.

The complex is targeting LEED® Gold certification. Most notably, its spaces include a 120-seat planetarium and a rooftop observatory. The planetarium has a 2,500-square-foot dome offering a high-tech environment for students to learn about astronomy and the night sky. The observatory is accessible from the building’s rooftop and will feature a retractable roof and two telescopes.

The collaborative design-build project broke ground in 2017 and welcomed students in August. CO Architects served as the architect for the complex.

Sundt has over 70 years of diverse project experience throughout the state of California. The company has three offices California offices in Sacramento, Irvine, and San Diego. Sundt is currently building the Hornet Commons student housing complex adjacent to the Sacramento State campus. In the Bay Area, the company is close to completing the Hilton Garden Inn in Sunnyvale and is working on two senior living properties for Avesta in Dublin and Novato, as well as building the new Shasta County Courthouse in Redding.
