California State University, Channel Islands is well on its way to having a new classroom and laboratory building in the heart of its historic campus in Camarillo. The 66,500-square-foot, four-story West Hall building will house labs, offices, lecture halls, and related support spaces to accommodate growth in the departments of computer science, environmental science, geography, geology, psychology and physics. The structure will also include a “green roof” planted like a garden.
Sundt is performing the $32 million university construction project safely and without major impacts or disruptions to the campus, says Project Manager Van Duong. Construction is progressing smoothly and the project is on track to be complete in time for the start of the 2015-2016 school year.
“Steel has topped out at the fourth floor for the main building and is underway for the one-story mechanical room. Concrete masonry unit walls are complete around the building perimeter on the first floor and have started the second floor lift. The slab on grade is complete, and concrete placement on the second floor deck began July 6. Underground utilities are 75 percent complete. Mechanical/plumbing, electrical, and fire protection subcontractors are mobilized and have been installing inserts, hanger supports, and overhead provisions.”
