Sundt Construction Completes Three-Story Learning Library Resource Center at San Diego Miramar College

 |  Press Release

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (May 20, 2013) – San Diego Miramar College, part of the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD), has added a three-story, 105,000-square-foot building to house its library resources and support information technology operations. Sundt Construction, Inc., served as the district’s construction manager, and utilized Building Information Modeling (BIM) during the design and construction phase of the project.

The new Learning Library Resource Center (LLRC) includes a 236-seat auditorium, classrooms, a computer lab and a media production facility. The adjacent central quad consists of landscaped areas and circular concrete pathways that mimic an aviation navigational tool – a homage to the site’s former use as an airfield. The building core is structural steel; a mix of plaster and stone veneer makes up the exterior. The project was funded as part of the SDCCD’s $1.555 billion Propositions S and N construction bond program.

“Immediately after Sundt was brought on board, we validated the owner’s budget and conducted a thorough constructability review, starting at the foundation and working our way through the entire building. As a team, we were able to revise several details that reduced cost and time,” said Sundt Project Director John Messick.

Sundt worked with Zagrodnik + Thomas Architects to construct the building, which is pending LEED Silver certification.

Environmentally friendly features include a light-colored exterior that helps reflect the sun’s heat to reduce cooling costs and minimize the heat island effect. Drought-tolerant landscaping and the latest water-saving technologies were implemented to reduce water use. The use of local and regional materials, low volatile organic compound-emitting indoor materials, adhesives, sealants and paints and a high-efficiency HVAC system contribute to reducing the building’s carbon footprint. To emphasize the district’s desire to conserve energy, educational signage was added to identify building components that promote sustainability.

As a leader in higher education construction throughout California, Sundt is currently building or recently completed projects on the Coast Community College, San Diego Community College District, De Anza Community College and University of California, Davis campuses.

The Propositions S and N construction bond program is providing new state-of-the-art instructional and career training facilities, major renovations, public safety enhancements and campus-wide infrastructure projects at City, Mesa and Miramar Colleges and six Continuing Education campuses throughout San Diego. Learn more at http://public.sdccdprops-n.com.
