Working together in an extensive value engineering process, Sundt, SDSU,  and the project design team were able to reduce construction costs by well over $1 million.

Architecturally, Aztec Student Union is a classic “mission revival” design that pays tribute to the rich history of San Diego State University. In keeping with the classic design, the 206,000-square-foot building features expansive, arches, arcades, balconies and courtyards.

To take advantage of San Diego's beautiful year-round climate, there are several outdoor seating areas and courtyards for dining, studying, relaxing and enjoying outdoor entertainment.

The building includes the Aztec Recreation Center Express – a satellite fitness center with cardio and resistance equipment (no locker room/showers);  Aztec Lanes, a state-of-the-art bowling and games center; three cafes, a pub/restaurant with a performance area, and an expanded Aztec Market; STA Travel and potential for additional retail spaces; Student Life & Leadership offices that will include student organization offices featuring workspace and a variety of resources, a meeting room, a Commuter Center and a Center for Leadership and Service; and the Cross-Cultural Center will house the Multicultural Resource Area, LGBTQ Resource Area, Women's Resource Area and the Mind, Body and Spirit Area.

There are also 14 meeting rooms of various sizes and capacities, including Montezuma Hall with a capacity of up to 1,200 and a multipurpose theater with 300 fixed/tiered seating, both with green rooms to serve as hospitality areas for speakers and performers; a large centralized outdoor courtyard and a performance stage in the patio area of the pub/restaurant will offer a variety of program offerings; and a centralized office area that will house Government Affairs, Business Services and the Aztec Student Union staff.
