EL PASO, Texas (December 17, 2018) – Sundt Construction, Inc. (www.sundt.com) was selected as the contractor for the Texas Department of Transportation’s I-10 Connect project last month. The $91 million project will add ramps, auxiliary lanes and direct connectors between I-10, I-110, U.S. 54, and Loop 375 (Cesar Chavez Border Highway).
“We’re excited to be selected for this project; it’s very important to improve mobility and to minimize congestion leading to the Port of Entry,” said Senior Project Manager Rudy Elias. “This is a great project for our El Paso Transportation Group and our employee-owners. Our amazing team on the GO-10 Project will transition nicely into this project.”
The current configuration on I-110 leading to the port of entry experiences excessive congestion during peak hours, resulting in spillbacks to U.S. 54 and the I-10 connector ramps. The new project includes the construction of 16 new bridges, earthwork, reinforced concrete paving, removal of 12 existing bridges, installing retaining walls, intelligent transportation system (ITS), large overhead sign structures, reinforced concrete pipe, a pump station and aesthetics. Work is expected to begin February of 2019.
Sundt will soon wrap up its work on the Go-10 project. The firm has been working on the 5.75-mile-long project by constructing collector-distributor (CD) lanes through the corridor, improving I-10’s connections with Paisano Drive and Border West Expressway. The project also includes the addition of lanes to I-10 in both directions and the reconfiguration of ramps and overpasses at three exits.
In July, Sundt was instrumental in repairing a utility bridge after an 18-wheeler crashed into it, damaging utilities and halting freeway traffic. The incident did not occur within Sundt’s project limits but was close enough that the team was able to assist.
