SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Dec. 15, 2015) – The San Diego Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America, Inc. (AGC) presented Sundt Construction, Inc. (www.sundt.com) with the Sustainable Project Award at AGC’s 2015 Build San Diego Awards banquet held at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront.

Sundt earned the top honor for its work on San Diego State University’s Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union, which was completed in 2013 and represents California’s first LEED Platinum student union. The project was one of just eight “best of the best” projects in San Diego County to take home a Build San Diego Award in their respective categories.

The panel of five judges evaluated Sundt and the rest of the nominees in terms of excellence in project management, innovation in construction techniques or materials, excellence in client service, its contribution to the community as it relates to the project, and meeting the challenges of a difficult job.

“We worked closely with SDSU and Cannon Design in a value engineering process, which ultimately reduced construction costs by well over $1 million and ensured the new facility’s classic design pays tribute to the rich history of San Diego,” said Sundt Vice President Jon Wald. “While the new building’s attractiveness provides a perfect centerpiece to the campus, it’s the efficiency and functionality of the facility that make it such an engineering marvel. With storm water control, operable windows, natural daylighting, solar panels and a radiant floor system, among many other features, the Aztec Student Union pushes the boundaries of green design and is an example of Sundt’s commitment to sustainability.”

The $78 million, three-story Aztec Student Union accommodates 30,000 students across 205,582 square feet of space.  It serves as the university’s hub for meeting, socializing and studying.  Additionally, the union features dining options, retail space, 14 meeting rooms and a fitness center.  The new student union has the latest in green building features, using 40 percent less energy and water than other similar buildings.

AGC is the nation’s largest and oldest construction trade association which is dedicated to improving the construction industry by employing the finest skills, promoting the latest technology and advocating building the best quality projects for public and private owners. The San Diego Chapter has been in existence for 88 years and has over 1,100 member companies.
