Sundt Celebrates Completion of Hausman Road Improvement Project

 |  Press Release

SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 14, 2016) – Sundt Construction, Inc. celebrated the completion of the City of San Antonio’s first design-build road improvement project during a ribbon cutting ceremony at Hausman Road on Monday afternoon.

The major thoroughfare connects Loop 1604 to Interstate 10. The project also incorporated two Bexar County road projects at two stages of design and all public utilities work along the roadway. This is the largest road improvement project approved by voters in the 2012 City of San Antonio Bond Program, and the project included funding from Bexar County.  Sundt partnered with AECOM (formerly URS Corporation) and Civil Engineering Consultants (CEC) to form the design-build team for the $74 million project.

For the past three years, the project team has converted 3.4 miles of two-lane road to four lanes with a median. Other improvements include San Antonio Water System, CPS Energy and AT&T utility upgrades throughout the route, five bridges, left turn lanes, curbs, driveway approaches, drainage improvements, traffic signals, flood control measures, and water quality systems in compliance with Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone requirements. Additionally, there are several features for pedestrians and cyclists, including sidewalks, bike lanes, and hike and bike trails connected to the Leon Creek Greenway.

The design-build approach enabled the team to make suggestions to the original plans that led to significant cost savings and project improvements. For example, the bicycle plans were changed from two lanes on either side of the roadway to one 10-foot-wide shared-use bicycle/pedestrian path along one side of the road, separated from vehicles. The new path is safer and connects more easily to the city’s hiking and biking trails. Suggestions from the design-build team yielded nearly $3 million in savings.

“Sundt is honored to have led such a significant road improvement project in our city,” Sundt Senior Vice President John Carlson said. “The new and improved Hausman Road thoroughfare will relieve area traffic congestion and provide a space for local residents to enjoy the Leon Creek Greenway with the new, spacious hike and bike trails.”

Sundt has a history of more than 45 years and more than $2 billion of project work throughout the Lone Star State. Among the general contractor’s notable Texas projects are the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) 911 Dispatch Center, San Antonio; the Career and Technical Education (CATE) buildings at Brackenridge, Lanier and Burbank high schools, San Antonio; work at SeaWorld, San Antonio; Warrior in Transition Barracks at Fort Sam Houston, Fort Bliss and Fort Hood; the Wichita Falls New Regional Airport Terminal; the West Seventh Street Bridge, Fort Worth; Reunion Tower, Dallas; Legacy Town Centers, Plano; and work at Austin Bergstrom International Airport Runway, Aprons & Taxiways.
