CYPRESS, Calif. (March 25, 2019) – Cypress College recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Veterans Resource Center on its campus to be constructed by Sundt Construction, Inc. “Building a center that helps those who have bravely served our country is something that gives our team great pride,” said Robert Stokes, Vice President and Irvine Regional Director for Sundt’s Building Group, California District. “This building will ultimately help our returning veterans transition back into civilian life and earn their degree.”

The groundbreaking celebration included representatives from Cypress College, North Orange County Community College District and Sundt, as well as featured speakers including a veteran student; retired Colonel of the U.S. Marines Keith Bushey; and State Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva.

“In 18 months, Cypress College will open its doors to a new state-of-the-art Veterans Resource Center for our veterans who are transitioning from active military service to civilian life,” said Cypress College President JoAnna Schilling, Ph.D. “The new VRC will offer educational and support services, and a home focused on the needs of our veterans who have given so much to us. I am thankful for the support of our Board of Trustees and Chancellor, our supportive city councils, local elected officials, donors, our Foundation Board, the tireless work of our staff and faculty — and, of course, the voters, who supported the Measure J bond.”

The Veterans Resource Center building addition will be the centerpiece of the Veterans Education Resource Complex, which includes a tribute garden, veterans memorial bridge and outdoor event plaza. The project also involves renovation of the existing Student Activities Center.

The VRC will be equipped with private counseling rooms, social space and patio, computers and other technology, and will be designed to meet the unique needs of student veterans while they attend Cypress College. Services offered in the VRC will include assistance with admissions and financial aid, veteran’s benefits, academic and personal advising, success and retention services, career development and advising services. The project is slated to complete in 2020.

Sundt has over 70 years of project work throughout the state of California. In February, the company broke ground on the new Science, Math and Engineering (SEM) building on the Cypress College campus, adjacent to the VRC. Sundt has offices in Irvine, San Diego and Sacramento.
