Sundt Selected for San Antonio Hausman Road Improvement Project

 |  Press Release

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 26, 2013) – The City of San Antonio selected Sundt Construction Inc. as the general contractor for the city’s first-ever design-build road improvement project. Sundt, in partnership with URS Corporation (URS) and Civil Engineering Consultants (CEC), will form the design-build team for the $62 million Hausman Road project. This is the largest single road project approved by the voters in the 2012 San Antonio Bond election. The project also incorporates funding from Bexar County. The early phases of construction will begin this fall and the project is scheduled for completion by the summer of 2015.

The Sundt / URS / CEC team will convert the two-lane Hausman Road into a four-lane road divided by a median from Loop 1604 to IH-10. The project will include five bridges, adding left turn lanes, curbs, driveway approaches, drainage improvements, traffic signals, flood control measures, water quality systems in compliance with Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone requirements, and utility upgrades throughout the corridor. Additionally, there will be several features for those who share the road, including sidewalks, bike lanes, and hike and bike trails throughout the project.

Sundt specializes in the design-build method of procurement, which often delivers superior quality in a more timely and cost-effective manner than traditional project development. The Sundt / URS / CEC team will bring its unique leadership approach by involving all stakeholders from the onset and throughout the project. Those stakeholders include the City of San Antonio, Bexar County, CPS, SAWS, Grey Forest Utilities, AT&T, Time Warner, area businesses and property owners.

“Sundt is proud to lead such an important road improvement project in the San Antonio community,” Senior Vice President and Texas District Manager John Carlson said. “We encourage those affected by this project to have the opportunity to be involved from the very beginning and we will communicate the progress throughout.  When this project is complete, the new Hausman Road corridor will not only improve area traffic, but it will enhance the quality of life for local residents through flood control measures and hike and bike trails.”

Sundt is recognized as a national transportation construction expert having completed more than 220 design-build projects. The Sundt / URS team has worked together on 14 prior design-build projects. Sundt is completing two key projects for the Texas Department of Transportation: the West Seventh Street Bridge in Fort Worth and the Trans Mountain Highway West Loop 375 project in El Paso.

Sundt has a history of more than 40 years and $1 billion of project work throughout the Lone Star State. Among the general contractor’s notable Texas projects are Warrior in Transition Barracks at Fort Bliss, Fort Sam Houston and Fort Hood; Reunion Tower, Dallas; Legacy Town Centers, Plano; the Department of Aviation, Austin; and the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) 911 Dispatch Center, San Antonio.
