Our 60th project for the University of Arizona will be among our most impactful.
Next year, we are breaking ground on the Student Success District in Tucson. The intent of creating the district is to improve student success through direct connections among student services, academic support and amenities in the heart of campus. The district will bring together student counseling, tutoring, course selection, assistance with their majors, aligning internships, coaching and facilitating job interviews and health and wellness.
“The Student Success District is a big push by the University to engage every student on campus,” said Sundt Project Director David Ollanik. “It’s an effort to engage them and provide resources they need to be successful in their time at the University and prepare them to enter the workforce.”
The work includes:
renovations to Bear Down Gym;
a new Student Success Building adjacent to Bear Down;
renovations and entry addition to the Main Library;
renovations to the Science-Engineering Library;
redevelopment of adjacent exterior areas into student-focused outdoor environments;
new links among the buildings.
The project includes two phases. Phase One will be the new Student Success Building and an addition to and remodeling portions of the Main Library. The Student Success Building will be located on the south side of Bear Down Gym and will house student support services. Phase Two will include renovations to Bear Down as well as improvements to the Science Library and open space between Bear Down and the library buildings.
The Student Success District is all about the future and helping young leaders earn their degrees. Our history with the UA is strong dating back to 1936 when we built the ROTC stables on campus.
“The University of Arizona is our University,” said Sundt Vice President and Regional Director Ian McDowell. “It has been since we moved our company to Tucson in 1929. The people who live and work at Sundt in Tucson have educated their families for nearly a century at this institution, so we are very grateful to be a part of future success on campus.”
Accounting Manager Lisette Guevara has been in the construction industry since 2003. She joined Sundt seven years later and became Payroll Supervisor in 2012 before being promoted to her current position in 2016.
She earned both her bachelor’s degree and MBA from the University of Arizona.
Lisette has a 6-year-old daughter, teaches catechism at her church on Sundays and does volunteer work in her spare time. She’s a big Dallas Cowboys and University of Arizona basketball fan.
What are your main duties as accounting manager?
I assist the controller in managing the different areas within the accounting department and help resolve issues. At the moment, I am also involved in projects to move all accounting functions into our new systems.
What’s the best part about your job?
I enjoy assisting our employee-owners in resolving issues and providing useful information they may need at the project level.
Do you have a favorite book or movie?
Yes. My favorite movie is “Gone with the Wind.” I enjoy the classics. My favorite book is “The Shack.” A person left the book on my doorstep when I was going through a tough time after my brother passed away and it definitely helped me.
What’s your most valued possession?
My rosary that was given to me by my godmother. It’s made of rose petals and I’ve had it for about 15 years and it still smells like roses.
Sundt Senior Virtual Construction Engineer Eric Cylwik speaks to a class at Arizona State University’s Del E. Webb School of Construction.
Sundt Senior Virtual Construction Engineer Eric Cylwik recently went back to school to share some of the many ways technology can improve the way general contractors serve their clients.
Eric spoke to an upper-level class at Arizona State University’s Del E. Webb School of Construction about the many advantages Building Information Modeling (BIM) can provide on a project. BIM involves generating and modeling both the physical and logistical characteristics of a building.
“I am convinced that the best way to learn a subject is to teach it,” Eric said. “The complicated subject of how BIM interfaces with every individual on a project is a difficult story to tell in under an hour, so it really forces me to refine how I approach technology. Engaging with the students is also an excellent opportunity to meet new people entering the industry. Ultimately, they’re the ones who will be using all of this technology.”
The fundamental idea Eric teaches the upcoming generation of builders is that technology will inevitably be the backbone of the construction industry.
“My background is in digital visualization, so I love being able to dive in to the technical details of how 3D models are created from photogrammetry and the puzzle of building complicated geometry in 3D,” Eric said. “Constructors take on significant risk with the selected means and methods for any project, so it is always a challenge to select the correct modeling tool to visualize that risk.”
Eric is quickly becoming popular on the college speaking circuit. He will be presenting to a class at the University of Arizona in November.

Sundt’s Intern Class of 2017 is settling in at job sites across the Southwest, the result of many months spent recruiting top college students.
We send Talent Acquisition/University Relations Specialist Mike Morales to more than a dozen campuses during the fall and winter to participate in job fairs and conduct interviews with potential interns.

While our recruitment efforts mainly focus on the Southwest – we have a combined 29 interns from Arizona State University and the University of Arizona – there are four students in this class from the relatively small University of Wisconsin-Stout. Part of the Wisconsin state system, the school has 9,600 students.
We also have four students from the University of Texas-El Paso and three apiece from Chico State University in California, Northern Arizona University and Texas A&M University.
About 75 percent of our interns are Construction Management and Civil Engineering students. Other fields of study include Mechanical, Industrial or Electrical Engineering and Architecture.
Our summer interns work until August, when many return to school. Several past interns have been hired at Sundt as employee-owners after graduation.
We’re already recruiting next year’s intern class to ensure we get the best candidates.
“A few weeks ago, (Operations Manager) Jim Pullen and I met a student from Arizona State University who came highly recommended,” Mike said. “We’re looking forward to having her on the team in 2018.”
