Each quarter, the Sundt Foundation convenes to review and approve grants that support nonprofits in the various communities where Sundt Construction, Inc. has offices and projects. This past quarter, the Foundation awarded 47 grants and a total of $132,000 to local organizations in Phoenix, Tucson, Sacramento, San Antonio and San Diego.
Established in 1999 by Sundt to give employees a means of giving back to the communities where they live and work, the Sundt Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that offers financial support to various local organizations whose missions are to solve problems and improve lives. While there are many pressing social issues in every community, our Foundation focuses specifically on serving the needs of disadvantaged children and adults.
On Sept. 30, 2011, Sundt’s CEO and Chairman J. Doug Pruitt will retire after 45 years with the construction company. At that time he will also step down from the Foundation’s board of directors, a position he has held since its inception. In a recent interview about his lengthy construction career, he was asked what achievements ranked among his proudest, to which he responded: participating in the creation of the Sundt Foundation.
“I would have to say that I’m extremely proud of the Sundt Foundation… The Sundt family had a long history of contributing to our society in many ways, but we hadn’t created an environment that encouraged our employees to get involved in charitable giving and volunteerism. The Sundt Foundation has given them that opportunity. They have really risen to the occasion and have donated more than $4 million to charities. They have also volunteered thousands of hours helping charities like Sojourner Center, Crisis Nursery and others with building or renovating their facilities. This spring, Sundt Construction, Inc. promoted Wayne Einbinder to vice president to spearhead the company’s recently established special projects division. The division focuses on construction services for large-scale projects ($100 million or more) with external joint-ventures, as well as those projects requiring the multi-discipline expertise unique to Sundt. The division supports the contractor’s long-term goals for growth regionally and nationally.
In May, Einbinder and the Special Projects Division – in collaboration with Sundt’s Sacramento office – celebrated its first project win with the award of the contract for the Kings County Courthouse in Hanford for the Superior Court of California, County of Kings, by the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC). Located in the Central Valley, the $100 million courthouse is the largest courthouse project Sundt has been awarded by the AOC to date.
Einbinder is no stranger to overseeing large-scale construction projects, which made him a perfect fit for leading the Special Projects Division. His work portfolio features more than $1 billion in education projects across seven different campuses. Einbinder’s experience also includes a $2 billion prison program for California Department of Corrections, a $2 billion airport program with Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and an $800 million program with the City of Phoenix. It’s been a big summer for Sundt’s heavy civil construction team. For starters, the construction company’s Heavy Civil Division was recently selected for two new projects at the Fort Bliss military installation in El Paso, Texas: the Scout Reconnaissance Crew Engagement Range Complex project and the Beaumont Army Medical Center Site Infrastructure Improvements project.
Additionally, the Division is excited about Sundt‘s recently opened satellite office in El Paso, located just 10 minutes from the airport and easily accessible from Interstate-10. Home to about 70 Sundt employees, the El Paso office will support the newly awarded heavy civil construction projects at Fort Bliss, other Sundt projects already underway at the military installation, as well as future opportunities for various company divisions in the West Texas and New Mexico markets. Fred Stone and his staff have been instrumental in the development of owner and subcontractor relationships in the region and will continue to lead Sundt’s efforts there. The company has also welcomed new local talent aboard, including Project Superintendent Ron Parks, who brings decades of scheduling experience and local knowledge to the staff.
Lastly, the heavy civil construction team is looking forward to launching two other projects it was awarded during the past two months: W. Seventh Street Bridge project in Fort Worth, and the Sellwood Bridge project in Portland. Construction on both the Texas and Oregon bridges will launch in 2012.

Time and money are top priorities in construction, and parametric estimating tools can prove instrumental in the overall success of a project because they help create a precise picture of what a budget can buy during the initial conceptualization. Through the use of advanced parametric estimating software, what was once a laborious series of drawings and abstract conversations has become an efficient and succinct way to analyze initial and operating costs dependent on site orientation, systems and materials.
Having been quick to adapt, apply and tailor these construction technologies for use in recent years, Sundt Construction has become an industry leader in parametric estimating. But not everyone understands the benefits. To help, Sundt’s resident expert Wayne Einbinder, vice president and director of the Special Projects Division, offers a look at 5 need-to-know facts about parametric estimating and how it is changing construction.
1. Parametric estimating can reduce the estimating process by 80 percent. It also provides more accurate cost-build estimates to be produced with less exertion involved. Tools like Dprofiler, software that Sundt employs in a unique fashion, allow for the creation of digital estimate models based on previously realized factors. A simple click and drag of the mouse within the 3D building model can produce precise estimates in real time.
2. Parametric estimating can produce more accurate results than detailed quantity take-offs during the early design phases. Prior to parametric estimating technology, each line item had to be laboriously measured, creating longer estimating timelines and greater potential for error as only what was drawn was estimated. Now with parametric estimating, all line items are intertwined by algorithms that work in real time so that when the height, footprint or number of stories is modified, the costs of all impacted line items are adjusted immediately.
