Sundt Graphic Design Specialist MC Herrera joined the company in January, moving from Austin to Tempe. She was born and raised in San Diego and has been a full-time graphic designer for five years.
This isn’t her first time living in Arizona: She attended Northern Arizona University from 2008-10 before graduating from The Art Institute of California – San Diego in 2012.
What made you want to work at Sundt?
I have a friend who works for Sundt and she has always said positive things. After learning more about the position and the company, I knew this was a place I wanted to be. I joined Sundt because I knew I would be challenged as a designer, but I would still be having fun. The ESOP was also another reason why I decided to join the company. Not every company has that available so it made Sundt stand out from others I was considering.
What does your job entail?
I’m helping the proposal team in creating and updating graphics. Secondly, I will be creating internal/external marketing collateral as well as website building, video-editing and logo design for our joint venture projects.
What inspires you when you’re designing?
I like seeing what other designers have done. If I see something cool while surfing the internet or get nicely designed junk mail, I save it! When I start a project, I use this as inspiration and it sparks multiple ideas that then turn into a campaign. I’m always sketching. While an idea might not be the best for one project, it might work for another.
How much of change is it to enter the construction world?
It’s definitely a new world to me but I’m a sponge and soaking in every detail.. So far it has been really fun and my team has been awesome in bringing me up to speed as I learn. I feel like I’m getting challenged in my design skills and it’s allowing me to grow as a designer. Everyone at Sundt is available if you have any questions so it’s not such a scary world.
You recently moved to the Phoenix area from Texas. Do you have some favorite activities there?
I’m scouting the city by checking out new places to eat, shop and take my dog. I am also a few hours away from my hometown of San Diego, so I see myself spending a few weekends back at home or cheering on the San Diego Padres during spring training in Peoria (let’s not talk about the Chargers). I’m also pretty stoked to head up to Flagstaff and check out my old stomping grounds at NAU.
What are some of your hobbies away from work?
I like to binge-watch on Netflix. I just finished watching Abstract: The Art of Design and I’m counting down the days until Season 5 of Orange is the New Black.
