Sundt and joint venture partner Austin Commercial have been hard at work on a consolidated rental car center at the San Diego International Airport – a Construction Manager at Risk project that will allow the airport to shift all rental car facilities to one centralized location.
The first major milestone for the aviation construction project was completed on time on June 1, 2015, when more than 60 percent of the building was turned over to the rental car companies to move in and start their tenant improvement work. Once finished, the facility will house 12 rental car companies and will include a customer service building, a quick-turn-around car prep facility, and a 5,000-car ready/return area.
The concrete structure is made up of more than 95,000 cubic yards placed by Sundt’s own skilled crews, with two million square feet of total floor area. “At the peak of the structural concrete work the team was placing on average in one week: 3,000 cubic yards of concrete, 140 tons of rebar and post tensioned cables, 40 columns and 45,000 to 55,000 square feet of elevated deck” said Sundt Project Manager Wesley Despins. “By averaging that much a week it allowed us to complete the expedited concrete frame schedule in twelve months.”
The rental process will be simplified with a single, centralized rental car lot for passengers, and the new facility will also help improve congestion and air quality by removing multiple shuttle vans from the streets. The Rental Car Center is on track to open in mid-January 2016.
