The ongoing initiative to improve quality of life for all service members has resulted in numerous projects to build single service member housing and renovate existing facilities. Sundt has demonstrated its leadership in this area by employing innovative project approaches to reduce costs and shorten schedules. An example of Sundt’s unique approach is BEQ-26.
The original building was constructed in 1951 as a Navy Hospital in San Diego’s Balboa Park. When its tour of duty as a medical facility ended several decades later, the nine-story building was converted into a multi-purpose dormitory that could house up to 285 sailors. Fifteen years later, the Navy had another mission for this aging veteran—a modern Bachelor Enlisted Quarters that would be similar to a private market apartment complex.
Sundt was awarded the conversion contract, which had a three-year construction schedule. Sundt finished the project ten months early and with a final cost that was $2.4 million less than the Navy’s original budget. Part of the savings resulted from Sundt’s innovative use of fiber-reinforced polymer to strengthen the building and provide added earthquake protection. The Associated General Contractors of America recognized Sundt’s outstanding achievement by selecting the project for a 2003 Marvin M. Black Partnering Award.
